Heat Shield
Alstern Technologies provides a complete design, project management supply and installation service for our heat shielding systems. Our heat shields are light-weight, rigidly structured without moving parts and they are able to withstand offshore environment and rough handling. Our heat shields are designed to protect personnel, equipment and flare deck away from high temperature/ radiant heat exposure and fire hazards.
There are three types of heat shields that are used to shield personnel, equipment and flare deck away from extreme heat conditions.
Ladder Shield
The Ladder Shield is a double sided skin woven wire mesh manufactured entirely from stainless steel 316L conforming to EN1.4404. The heat shield and its fixings are inert, and the method of construction makes it both rugged, able to withstand rough handling during erection, and easily demountable should it need to be removed for maintenance purposes. Although the primary purpose of the shielding is to protect equipment and personnel from the effect of radiated heat it has a secondary and important feature in that it acts as a very effective weather shield.
The two different specifications of heavy duty woven wire mesh form the primary shield (flame side) woven wire mesh has been proven able to withstand continuous thermal cycling and repeated wind buffeting without failure. Woven wire mesh allows air movement therefore reducing the possibility of pockets of hazardous gases, it lets natural light penetrate the work area and allows personnel to maintain visual contact with their surroundings.
The screens are fixed to the support structure using stainless steel bolts. The bolting method of attachment requires no special tools and allows for the insertion of a bush between the stainless steel fixing bolt and the carbon steel support structure, thereby lessening the possibility of galvanic action. An insulation gasket is inserted between the shield and the support structure.
Mini Shield
The Mini Shield is a single-sided skin woven wire mesh construction and is manufactured entirely from stainless steel 316L. The heat shield and its fixings are inert, and the rugged construction enables it to withstand rough handling during erection, and easily demountable for maintenance purposes. The Mini Shield is very effective in protecting equipment and within limits personnel from the radiant heat effects as well as a weather shield.
The single layer of heavy duty mesh woven forms the primary radiant shield. Shielding manufactured from woven wire mesh has been proven able to withstand continuous thermal cycling and repeated wind buffeting without failure. Woven wire mesh allows air movement therefore reducing the possibility of pockets of hazardous gases; it lets natural light penetrate the work area and allows personnel to maintain visual contact with their surroundings.
Flare Deck Shield
The Flare Deck Shield is of a single skin construction a Load Bearing Grid Floor designed to withstand an evenly distributed load of 5kN/m2. It is installed at the flare deck to protect and shield personnel and equipment from the extreme heat of up to 700°C.
The design and construction of Flare Deck Shield can be customized to allow penetrations such as riser pipes to pass through. Around each penetration and outer edge panels a 100mm kick plate form an integral part of the fabrication.
